Scientists have found that many of the benefits of aerobic and anaerobic exercise stem from the activity of an enzyme known as 5’ adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase, or AMP-k, often called the “metabolic master switch.” During exercise, physical stress on the muscles and bones triggers the up-regulation of a family of proteins known as sestrins, which in turn activate the AMP-k enzyme. When AMP-k is activated, it triggers a cascade of metabolic effects that influence fat burning. The net result is improved muscular performance, reduced body fat and optimized metabolic activity.
Actiponin is a powerful herbal extract that activates the AMP-k enzyme, much like physical exercise does. It’s derived from Gynostemma pentaphyllum (also known as jiaogulan), a calming adaptogenic herb that has been used for centuries as a longevity tonic, sometimes known as “the immortality herb.” Scientists have identified natural saponins in gynostemma known as damulins which have been shown to strongly activate AMP-k in phytochemical studies.
